Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (R-IN) introduced the PAPER Act, legislation to disincentivize the burning of recyclable paper at waste-to-energy facilities. Currently, the federal tax code allows for waste-to-energy facilities to receive an incentive for the burning of recyclable paper mixed with waste. Under the PAPER Act, waste-to-energy facilities would not get a tax credit for burning recycled paper mixed with waste.

Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island, Queens) led 22 Members of Congress from the states most affected in an urgent call to authorize the North Atlantic Rail Corporation (NARC) to receive federal funds to design, build, and oversee a high-speed rail (HSR) project across the Northeast. The first of its kind, the bold and forward-thinking project would increase frequency and reliability of travel across the region, while fueling economic growth, creating thousands of jobs for decades to come, and reducing carbon emissions.
With summer approaching, Congressman Tom Suozzi, co-chair of the Long Island Sound Caucus and a committed environmentalist, and EPA officials announced that almost 50 million pounds of nitrogen have been removed from the sewage treatment effluent each year in the Long Island Sound. As Mayor of Glen Cove in the late 1990s, Suozzi led Glen Cove as the first city on Long Island to cut nitrogen effluent by 50%.
