Suozzi: Bipartisan plan is like “an oasis in desert of dysfunction”

Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D -- Long Island, Queens), as Vice-Chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, announced that they have released a bold new bipartisan proposal to stabilize the individual health care market. If passed, this plan, the first bipartisan plan that has been proposed, would help stabilize the individual market by trying to reduce premiums, among other things.

On Saturday, Congressman Tom Suozzi will announce that he is introducing bipartisan legislation with Congressman Lee Zeldin (R – Long Island) that would designate the George Washington Spy Trail on Long Island as a National Historic Trail. Rep. Suozzi will make the announcement at an open house at his Huntington district office that will feature numerous historic societies with people dressed in period costumes. The story of the Washington Spy Trail has been brought to life by the critically acclaimed television show “TURN” on AMC, which tells the stories of these unsung heroes. Ian Kahn, who plays George Washington in the show, will speak in support of Congressman Suozzi’s legislation at the open house.

Today, an amendment introduced by Rep. Tom Suozzi which increased funding levels for the Navy/Grumman plume and other contaminated sites around the country by $42 million, passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support. Congressman Pete King (R – Seaford) supported Suozzi’s efforts. Overall, 25 Republicans joined 189 Democrats in passing the amendment.

Undergoes Prostate Cancer Screening to Raise Awareness
Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi underwent a routine prostate exam as part of a new effort to raise awareness about prostate cancer and the importance of getting checked. The screening was administered by Integrated Medical Foundation (IMF), a non-profit organization which promotes awareness and early detection of prostate cancer. It entailed a PSA blood test and a digital rectal exam administered by IMF Founding President Dr. Deepak Kapoor, M.D. of Advanced Urology Centers of New York.

Amendment to Cut Down on Waste, Fraud and Abuse in Defense Contracts
Last night, Congressman Tom Suozzi passed his first major legislative initiative through the House of Representatives. Suozzi teamed up with House Armed Services Committee Chairman Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX) and fellow CPA Rep. Mike Conaway (R-TX) to submit a bipartisan amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) aimed at cutting down on waste, fraud and abuse within Department of Defense (DOD) contracts.

FAA Outlines Concrete Steps to Address Noise Levels

Today, Rep. Tom Suozzi and Rep. Pete King (R – Seaford) joined together urging the House to pass increased funding levels for cleanup efforts related to the Navy/Grumman plume. King applauded Suozzi’s efforts to secure bipartisan support of $30 million in the original National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), and an additional $12 million in an amendment to the bill. This money would go to the Navy Environmental Restoration account, which funds remediation and cleanup efforts of the Navy/Grumman Plume and other sites around the country.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Representative Tom Suozzi introduced bicameral legislation known as the Merchant Marine Academy Improvement Act. This legislation would help address sexual assault and harassment by giving midshipmen more resources to report these crimes and give the Academy more training and resources to respond to and prevent sexual assault on campus and at sea. The bill would also, for the first time, make the Merchant Marine Academy subject to the Title IX requirements that are followed by every other college and university in the United States where students are eligible for federal student financial aid.
