SUOZZI ANNOUNCES OVER $317,000 IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR SUFFOLK COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT

Grants will be used for community policing, youth engagement, and de-escalation training programs; Since first elected to public office, Suozzi has vigorously worked to provide funds to support local police departments

Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island, Queens) announced that the Suffolk County Police Department will receive over $317,000 in federal grants for de-escalation and youth engagement training programs. A photo of Suozzi with a Suffolk County Police officer can be found here.

“Every day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, members of our local police departments are protecting us and serving us. Some days are uneventful. Other days are full of danger. And then there are the days when their dedication to their jobs leads them to perform extraordinary acts of heroism.” said Suozzi. "These grants will be key in ensuring the brave men and women of the Suffolk County Police Department can continue to carry out their duty to serve and protect our community.”

“The Suffolk County Police Department has strived to engage our youth in productive activities to keep them on the right path,” Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Stuart Cameron said. “The Youth Engagement funding will allow us to develop new police/youth mentorship opportunities as well as engage homeless youth in positive programs, all of which are designed to create trust, foster understanding, and prevent involvement in criminal activity. Additionally, the De-Escalation Training funding will provide training and equipment to support our efforts in improving officers’ ability to approach potentially dangerous situations.”

• Youth engagement training grant: $124,453
