Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D – Long Island, Queens) attended a White House signing ceremony in the Oval Office as President Joseph R. Biden signed Suozzi’s legislation to award the Harlem Hellfighters a long-overdue Congressional Gold Medal.
Today, at the 369th Infantry Regiment in Harlem, New York, Congressman Tom Suozzi stood with U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Adriano Espaillat, state and local elected officials, and descendants of the Harlem Hellfighters to announce that legislation awarding the Harlem Hellfighters the Congressional Gold Medal is on its way to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law.
Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D - Long Island, Queens) who, after years of advocating for the removal of derelict buildings at the Northport campus, met with Dr. Antonio Sánchez, the Executive Director of the Northport VA Medical Center, for an update and inspection on the progress of the demolition. Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island, Queens) released the following statement after U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand helped pass Suozzi’s Harlem Hellfighters Congressional Gold Medal Act to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 369th Infantry Regiment, commonly known as the Harlem Hellfighters, a black infantry regiment of the New York National Guard that fought in WWI who never received formal recognition from the Federal government for their service.

“The Governor has done the right thing by resigning. There is no doubt that Andrew Cuomo has accomplished much for our state, from the property tax cap, to rebuilding our infrastructure, to instituting a $15 min wage and battling COVID. It is imperative that our next governor continue the positive achievements of the Cuomo administration and help once again make New York the Empire State.”

Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) announced the creation of the Congressional Uyghur Caucus. The Caucus will raise awareness of the Chinese Community Party’s (CCP) systemic human rights violations against the Uyghur people in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China and support legislation aimed at addressing the largest coordinated human rights abuse campaign of the 21st century.
“People are saying I want to ‘live free or die.’ Well, they are living free, and other people are dying,” said Suozzi. “We need everyone to get vaccinated in our country.”

Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island, Queens) welcomed Charles Cassara, the owner of SC Fitness in Farmingdale and Hicksville, and Joseph Cannizzo, the owner of Judo Jujitsu dojo on Staten Island, to his Washington, DC office to discuss the urgent need for Congress to provide targeted relief for New York’s gyms and fitness facilities.
