WASHINGTON -- Democrat Tom Suozzi was sworn in as a congressman again Wednesday, representing Long Island and Queens' 3rd congressional district.
Suozzi brought his own local cheering section to Congress. About 100 people from Long Island were shouting his name as he called for a new era of harmony and working across the aisle.
President Biden noted the other day that Russia and China are boasting that they do not think democracy can survive in the current world of social media and the 24-hour news cycle. They don’t think we can do big things anymore. They think we are too divided. The two major pieces of legislation that make up the Build Back Better agenda would not only dramatically help New Yorkers, but passage would also prove our foreign adversaries wrong.

Congressman Tom Suozzi, who represents New Yorkers from eastern Queens across the northern half of Nassau County into the western sections of Suffolk, is absolutely right to stick to his “No SALT, no deal” demand in refusing to support any changes to the federal tax code unless the horrendously unfair limitation on deduction of state and local taxes is repealed.

As the brutal behind-the-scenes brawl plays out over the Democrats’ $3.5 trillion reconciliation package, Rep. Thomas Suozzi of New York is warning once again that he and a group of blue state Democrats won’t support any legislation that fails to restore the full deduction for state and local taxes (SALT) eliminated by the 2017 GOP tax bill.

Why does America feel so fractured with so much division? The rancor and misinformation proffered by some of my colleagues in the House of Representatives, the blood-boiling commentary on cable "news," and the negative tone on social media, which is often amplified by our foreign adversaries, has made us "a house divided against itself." Can we continue to "stand"?
In 2017, as a freshman congressman from Long Island (and a slice of Queens), Tom Suozzi was on the righteous but losing side of a noble fight. He voted against the terrible Trump tax change that capped deductions of state and local taxes, punishing millions of Americans by raising their liability to the IRS by tens of thousands of dollars a year. Suozzi wasn’t alone, as every Democrat in the House and the Senate opposed the SALT cap, as did some Republicans.
