Suozzi Statement on Treasury Launching Coronavirus State and Local Recovery Funds
Local governments to receive much-needed aid; New York State to receive $774 million to distribute to towns and villages
– Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D- Long Island, Queens) released the following statement after the U.S. Treasury Department’s released Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, established under the American Rescue Plan Act.
“This is so important to the state and local governments. That's why we fought so hard for it,” said Suozzi. “The great news is that the money is there, and we are getting more specifics and guidance on some of the larger local governments. The local smaller villages and towns, however, are anxious to know exactly how much they will be receiving as part of this lifeline package. We are pushing and should get the final numbers soon.”
“President Biden’s American Rescue Plan has delivered for the American people to help bring us out of the pandemic and I look forward to continuing to work with him and my colleagues in Congress on addressing the challenges we face so we can build back better.”
Funding for New York State, New York City, Nassau County, Suffolk County, Queens County, and Huntington are found below. Allocations for smaller municipalities (or “non-entitlement units”) will be announced in the coming days.
New York State: $774 million to distribute to towns and villages
New York City: $4.2 billion
Nassau County: $385 million
Suffolk County: $286 million
Queens County: $437 million
Huntington: $22 million
This funding will be used to cover the cost of fighting the pandemic, make up lost revenue due to the economic shutdown, help our schools fully reopen safely, and help keep essential public employees such as teachers, firefighters, and police officers employed.
Since the start of the pandemic, Suozzi was in a nearly year-long battle for the inclusion of direct aid in COVID-19 legislation to help New York State and local governments that were particularly hard-hit by the pandemic.
In addition to funding for state and local aid, the American Rescue Plan offers unprecedented, bold relief to a once-in-a-hundred-year crisis. It will help real people, defeat COVID-19, and ensure rapid economic recovery.
