Suozzi Presented Edward J. Malloy Memorial Leadership Award by NYS Building and Construction Trades Council

Recognized for his enduring leadership and dedication to the labor movement.
Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island, Queens) was awarded the Edward J. Malloy Memorial Leadership Award by the New York State Building and Construction Trades Council. The award, which was established in 2013 to commemorate Edward J. Malloy’s legacy as a leader in the labor movement, was presented to Suozzi, “in recognition of your Courageous Leadership and Dedication to the Labor Movement.”
“When it comes to Tom Suozzi, my relationship with him is not a 'Johnny-come-lately' one. Tom and I share almost three decades of working together starting when he was a Mayor, then County Executive, and now as a Member of Congress, said Gary LaBarbera. "I'm just really proud of Tom Suozzi. I really value our friendship. I value our relationship. And, I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award."
Gary LaBarbera, President of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York and the New York State Building and Construction Trades Council, presented the Edward J. Malloy Memorial Leadership Award to Suozzi.
“We face major issues in our country. From the border to climate and energy, to housing and cost of living. Everything we do must be looked at through the lens of how this affects the wages, benefits, cost of living, and quality of life of working men and women. We need to get back to the basics of talking about the American Dream, where hard work is rewarded with wages sufficient to guarantee a home, health insurance, children’s education, and retirement security,” said Suozzi. “I am so grateful to the Building Trades for this recognition and their steadfast support.
“Special thank you to my very good friend, Gary LaBarbera, for his support and wise counsel over the course of my thirty plus years in public service. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Gary,” said Suozzi.
Suozzi was presented the award at the annual NYS Building & Construction Trades Council Legislative Breakfast in Washington, DC. The event was held in conjunction with North American Building Trades Union’s Annual Legislative Conference with more than 300 building trades delegates from across New York State in attendance.
Established in 1958, the NYS Building & Construction Trades Council represents over 200,000 unionized construction workers in New York State.
