Suozzi Introduces Bipartisan Legislation to Coordinate Northern Border Security   

Washington, DC - Congressman Tom Suozzi (D - Long Island, Queens) introduced the Securing Our Northern Borders Act last week. This bipartisan legislation, co-led by Representatives Claudia Tenney (R-NY) and Chris Pappas (D-NH), will be considered on the House floor next week.   

 

Suozzi’s bill would establish the Department of Homeland Security Northern Border “Mission Center.” This center would coordinate the implementation of the DHS Northern Border Strategy.  

 

“We must secure the Northern Border Strategy as well as the Southern Border to protect our communities,” said Suozzi. “This Mission Center would serve as ground zero for coordinating efforts to enforce immigration laws and stop illegal drug trafficking along our northern border. We must secure our borders, fix the broken asylum system that hasn’t been updated since the 1980s, and modernize the legal immigration system, all while making sure we treat people like human beings.”   

 

Since returning to Congress this past February, Suozzi has made fixing the broken immigration system and bringing ‘order to the border’ a top priority. He was appointed to the Committee on Homeland Security and as the chair of the Democrats for Border Security Caucus. Tom has also successfully called on President Biden to take executive action to bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum, while also extending work permits to the 1.1 million immigrant spouses married to U.S. citizens. He has also forged a bipartisan coalition of ‘business, badges, and the Bible’ to push Congress for real solutions on this critical issue. 

 

"The U.S. faces an immigration crisis because too many politicians have spent years fighting over and weaponizing immigration policy but haven’t done a thing to fix it. We need Democrats and Republicans to come together on comprehensive immigration reform that secures our border and provides for legal immigration,” added Suozzi.
