January 4, 2021
Press Release
Support from Long Island Congressional Delegation joins members of the Long Island State Senate Delegation and Nassau and Suffolk County Executives urging Amtrak to consider “in-service refurbishment” of the East River Tunnels

Today, Congressman Tom Suozzi (NY-03), Congressman Lee Zeldin (NY-01), Congresswoman Kathleen Rice (NY-04), Congressman Andrew Garbarino (NY-02), and Congressman Gregory Meeks (NY-05) expressed support for Amtrak to conduct “in-service refurbishments” of the East River Tunnels.

The Long Island Congressional Delegation joins New York State Senators Todd Kaminsky, Tim Kennedy, Leroy Comrie, Anna Kaplan, John Brooks, Jim Gaughran, and Kevin Thomas, and Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, calling on Amtrak to immediately consider implementing “in-service refurbishment” of the East River Tunnels and to provide a timeline as to when repair of damaged tubes in the East River Tunnels will begin.

“As Members of the Long Island Congressional Delegation, we represent millions of Long Island Railroad riders concerned with the lack of progress on the rehabilitation of the East River Tunnels. We write in support of New York State Senators Kaminsky, Comrie, Kennedy, Kaplan, Gaughran, Brooks, and Thomas and County Executives Laura Curran and Steve Bellone’s January 4th letter requesting you provide a detailed plan and timeline for addressing the rehabilitation of the East River Tunnels and why “in-service refurbishment,” which can resolve it faster and cheaper, cannot be implemented and undertaken now,” the lawmakers wrote.
