Suozzi Slams Passage of GOP Budget, Setting Up Elimination of State and Local Tax Deduction
Congressman Tom Suozzi issued the following statement shortly after he voted against the Republican budget, which passed the House of the Representatives:
“Today’s reckless and misguided vote paves the way for tax reform that includes eliminating the state and local tax deduction that over 250,000 families in my district rely upon. 43 percent of households in my district claim this deduction at an average rate of $18,300. Our district is top-ten in America for most state and local tax deduction claims. In New York, eliminating this deduction would be devastating -- costing the average family $5,300.
“New York State is the largest net donor to the federal government and we are home to some of the highest state and local taxes in the nation. Our people pay more than their fair share, and eliminating the state and local tax deduction leaves them with the short end of the stick. Long Island families should not be asked to foot the bill for tax cuts that will go to red states which don’t contribute as much as New York to the federal government.
“We must continue to fight against the elimination of the state and local tax deduction so Long Island families are not hit with a whopping tax increase.”
