SUOZZI REQUESTS IRS EXTEND TAX FILING DEADLINE AMID CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

March 16, 2020
Press Release

Washington, DCToday, Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island, Queens) is calling on Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Charles Rettig to extend the tax filing deadline due to the current outbreak of Coronavirus. The IRS has authority to extend the time for filing any return for six months or less and the authority to waive certain penalties upon a showing of reasonable cause.

Suozzi’s request comes less than a week after he joined the rest of his Ways and Means Democratic Colleagues in sending a letter to Commissioner Rettig asking that the Commissioner provide the committee an update on the impact of the coronavirus on the tax return filing season and to evaluate if the current situation warranted using existing authorities as Commissioner to extend the deadline.

“In light of the rapidly changing circumstances, our taxpayers do not have the time to wait for much-needed tax relief, I am now calling on the Treasury Secretary Mnuchin and IRS Commissioner Rettig to extend the deadline to file tax returns,” said Suozzi. “Not only does our government need to ensure the health of the American people, but we also need to ensure their financial security by giving people the extra resources they need during this difficult time.”

In last week’s letter, Suozzi and his colleagues also asked Commissioner Rettig to consider the need for relief from certain filing and payment penalties for taxpayers and communities affected by coronavirus.
