Suozzi Issues Statement Ahead of Today’s House Vote on Anti-BDS Resolution

July 23, 2019
Press Release

Congressman Tom Suozzi (D – Long Island, Queens) has issued a statement ahead of today’s vote in the House of Representatives on H.R. 246, Opposing efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel and the Global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement targeting Israel:

“The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign has been heralded by the critics and enemies of Israel as a penalty for what they claim is Israel’s oppression of the Palestinian people. Nothing could be further from the truth!

These critics and enemies of Israel are in reality simply adding the BDS campaign to their arsenal of weapons to try and isolate, weaken, delegitimize, and ultimately destroy the State of Israel, as they have for decades.

For over 70 years, Israelis have endured terrorism: bombs detonated on public buses, in cafes, and at religious observances. Israel has withstood rockets from Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. These acts of terrorism and aggression have been beaten back by a nation that is simply trying to defend itself and persevere under unrelenting attacks. Through it all, Israel remains a democracy, governed by the rule of law. Israel’s citizens, regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexual preference are afforded the protections of the State, including universal health care.

So now Israel’s enemies have adopted another tactic. BDS is an anti-Semitic movement, plain and simple. The founder of BDS, Omar Barghouti stated very clearly, “Definitely, most definitely we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No Palestinian, rational Palestinian, not a sell-out Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.” The goals of BDS are clear. Just read their own words.

Israel shall not and cannot yield. We, in the United States must stand with our ally, an ally that shares our values and always stands with us.”
