Suozzi Continues Bipartisan Commitment to Protecting the Long Island Sound
Glen Cove, NY— Earlier this year, Suozzi co-led a bipartisan group of Members of Congress in urging the House Appropriations Committee to support robust funding for Long Island Sound restoration efforts. Earlier this week, the Committee honored Suozzi’s bipartisan request and voted to approve this funding. Suozzi was joined by fellow Long Island Representatives Gillen (D-NY) and Garbarino (R-NY) in their request to the Appropriations Committee, on which Long Island Representative LaLota (R-NY) sits.
“I'm proud to have helped deliver an increase of 1000% in funding to improve the Long Island Sound since I came to Congress in 2017,” said Congressman Suozzi. “As Co-Chair of the bipartisan Long Island Sound Caucus, I helped increase funding for the Long Island Sound Geographic Program by 1000% from $4 million in 2016 to its current level of $40 million.”
The Long Island Sound is one of our nation's great natural treasures, supporting more than $9.4 billion in economic activity, providing critical wildlife habitat, and serving millions of residents across the region.
This investment will help improve water quality, reduce nitrogen pollution, protect coastal resources, and strengthen the partnerships among federal, state, and local governments that have made Long Island Sound a national model for environmental restoration. Federal support is essential to ensuring that the substantial investments already made by New York, Connecticut, and local communities continue to deliver results.
“I am proud to stand with my Democratic and Republican colleagues in support of this funding and will continue working to preserve and restore Long Island Sound for the families, businesses, fishermen, and communities that depend on it,” concluded Suozzi.
